Slow progress is still progress
Written 4/1/2024.
What I have to keep reminding myself is that progress, no matter how small, is still progress. We read about people who’ve made massive changes and go from zero to 100 in a matter of months. They are like sleek race cars.
Then there’s me, plodding along.
That’s okay. Plodding is still forward progress. It’s those who park their carts along the side of the road and don’t continue that fail.
Forward progress, even if it’s two steps forward and one back, is still good. As someone said, we overestimate how much we can get done in a short period of time and grossly underestimate what we can get done over a long period of time.
This is true.
Really, as Earl Nightingale used to say, working towards a worthy goal is actually success. Not the actual achievement of said goal.
Of course, if you achieve said goal, that’s awesome! Celebrate, enjoy your victory, then start writing your next story.
In my own life, problems that seemed so large and unsolvable now are merely stones along the highway. Not because those problems are smaller, but because I’ve grown so much bigger than those problems.
Some things I just don’t sweat. Like when an account manager left in the middle of our crunch time. My response was “meh” we’ll get through this, and we did.
If I can keep plodding along, then you can too. Take one small step towards your “worthy goal” and tell me how it feels. It feels really good most of the time.
Keep plodding along my friends. I’ll be there with you. Cheering you on.
With blessings,
Robert
