Ruminations on Drinking
Written 5/1/2024.
I’m not a drinker. Given the choice between an alcoholic beverage or diet soda, I’d choose the soda 99 out of 100 times.
This doesn’t mean I don’t drink, it’s just rare. So, it’s hard for me to understand how a person can drink a lot of alcohol and think that’s fun.
I spent a week with people who drank. At one point, one person drank the equivalent of 2 bottles of wine. Luckily, I wasn’t there for the second bottle.
I don’t believe they are an alcoholic, but I do believe they are trying to manage their demons via drinking.
If you have pain. If you can’t deal with the stress of the moment, then you need to face it head on. Pain and stress are instructive, just like feeling pain from touching a hot pan is too. If you deaden the pain, then you will not resolve your problems.
There are very limited times when deadening the pain is a reasonable pathway. One is if you are in so much pain, it is either that or take your life. If this is the case, please get professional help.
If you find yourself drinking and thinking that’s what makes the night fun, then you really do need to rethink your life. Joy comes from being alive, not through an altering substance.
Of course this is my limited, biased opinion. If you have an opinion, please weigh in.
